Metro Health Foundation awards Mercy Primary Care Center grant for diabetes management

Detroit, Mich. (Nov. 25, 2009) –Mercy Primary Care Center of Detroit (MPCC) has recently received a grant award of $7,500 from the Metro Health Foundation of Detroit for its diabetes management program. In an effort to maximize the number of patients who will be treated within this program, MPCC also received a matching grant from the Trinity Health Institute for Health and Community Benefits, bringing the total grant awarded to $15,000.

MPCC will use this grant to provide medical eye exams to uninsured diabetic patients in collaboration with the Optometric Institute and Clinic of Detroit. Medical eye exams are a crucial part of the continuum of care for those patients with diabetes. Without proper vision care, complications can arise for the patient, including retinopathy, cataracts and the need for laser surgery.

MPCC is a health center serving the needs of Detroit’s uninsured. Our mission is to provide a medical safety net for uninsured adults who require healthcare services to improve their quality of life. MPCC seeks to eliminate barriers to comprehensive care by providing laboratory, diagnostic testing, limited specialty care, health education, pharmaceuticals and transportation free of charge. MPCC treats the whole person-body, mind, and spirit-rather than an isolated ailment. MPCC is a Ministry Organization of Trinity Health.

The Trinity Health Institute for Health and Community Benefits focuses on improving public health in Trinity Health communities, including chronic disease prevention and management among poor and vulnerable populations, eliminating inequities and disparities in health and healthcare services, and improving access to healthy environments and health care services for all.
